The beginnings of coinage in India

These coin themselves are small pieces of silver mostly weighing about 3 grams but with a range from 0.2 to 11.5 grams. They are decorated on one side with marks impressed onto the face of the coin with engraved punches.

Some of the punch-marks can be recognised as animals, plants, religious symbols or everyday objects.

The coins above date from the pre-Mauryan period, around 600-320 BC. The narrow rectangular coin belongs to the Kandhara kingdom, and the others to either the Surasena or Magadha kingdoms.
